Last April I had the chance to visit Australia for the first time. I didn’t plan the trip specifically because I thought April was a good time to visit, I just happened to have time off work, and that was where I wanted to go. Overall, I had a great time! I’ve put together this guide so you can know what to expect when visiting Australia in April.

Weather in Australia in April

April in Australia is Autumn! Before I looked into it, I always imagined that Australia was always really warm, but that is not the case. The weather varies depending where you are in the country. Sydney and Hobart were both around 15 degrees and rainy when I visited in April. Airlie Beach and Brisbane, which are further north, were much warmer! They both were very sunny and around 25-30 degrees. Warm weather can still be found in April in Australia, but is not guaranteed! This is part of the rainy season for many parts of Australia, so be careful and check the forecast if you plan on doing a road trip.

Activities in Australia in April

The time of year can affect some activities you might want to do in Australia. I stayed on the East Coast, and one thing I noticed during my trip in April was the risk of box jellyfish in the ocean. They are normally found from October to May, and their stings can be deadly. This did not prohibit me from going in the ocean- I just had to wear a ‘stinger suit.’ I went on several day tours that involved swimming and snorkeling, and they all provided stinger suits for protection.

Of course, the time of year is something to keep in mind if you are set on visiting beaches, regardless of jellyfish. I mentioned that places I visited that were further north were perfect beach weather, but the south was not. For instance, when I visited Bondi Beach in Sydney, the weather was terrible. It was cold, windy, and very rainy. The iconic Bondi Icebergs pool was closed because the wind was causing huge waves that were crashing over the edge of it.

Other Things to Know

The peak tourist season in Australia is summer, which is from December to February. Also, the winter in a popular time for Australians to travel north, since it is much warmer than the rest of the country. So if you are visiting Australia in April, the shoulder season, you are less likely to encounter crowds. You also might get better rates for hotels and flights!

Overall, I think visiting Australia in April is worth it. However, if you are really looking forward to warm weather and enjoying the beach, you may want to travel at a different time.
