I recently had the opportunity to spend a few weeks in Buenos Aires. The city was amazing, but one of the highlights was definitely the food! I tried so many restaurants, street vendors, and treats all over the city. Based on my experience, I’ve compiled this list of all the best things to eat in Buenos Aires.
First, lets start of a list of foods you need to try. These are widely available all over the city, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding them.
- Steak: Grilled meat is a staple in Argentina. There are many steakhouses in the city (see my restaurant list below for some of my favourites), and a trip to Buenos Aires would not be complete without a visit to one of them. Steak is definitely one of the best things to eat in Buenos Aires.
- Empanadas: Empanadas are a staple food in Argentina. They are a pastry with a delicious meat or veggie filling. You can find them anywhere- they are pretty cheap to buy from street vendors throughout the city.
- Wine: Not a food exactly, but wine is a huge industry in Argentina, and there are so many places to try great wines in Buenos Aires.
- Mate: Another Argentinian favourite, yerba-mate is a tea that is very popular with locals. It can be difficult to find a place to try it in a restaurant, as it is not traditionally served in that environment. There are experiences you can register for, such as this one: Buenos Aires: Try Mate – Masterclass with Argentine Pastry, where you can try mate with a guide.
- Pizza: Buenos Aires has a prominent Italian immigrant community. Because of this, there are so many great Italian restaurants throughout the city. A good pizza is an absolute must-have when visiting Buenos Aires!
- Alfajores: Alfajores are a Spanish dessert that are super popular in Argentina. They are a sandwich cookie, and are so tasty!
- Dulce de Leche: Dulce de Leche is basically creamy caramel, and it is used in so many desserts in Buenos Aires. You will find dulce de leche cakes, alfajores, ice cream, chocolate, and more- and they are all delicious!
- Ice cream: There are so many ice cream/gelato shops in Buenos Aires! It is essential that you try a few while you are there.

I had the chance to try so many restaurants while I was in Buenos Aires! While I loved most of them, I’ve managed to narrow it down to a small list of my absolute favourites.
Best Restaurants in Buenos Aires:
- La Cabrera: This was one of my favourite steakhouses in Buenos Aires. The food was absolutely delicious, and seemed very authentic. It is a but pricy, but, as with most steakhouses there, the portions were huge!
- El Preferido: This Michelin starred restaurant is one of the most iconic in Buenos Aires and serves a variety of Argentinian dishes. The milanesa here is, in my opinion, the best in the city.
- Café Tortoni: This French café is a bit touristy, but in my opinion, is a must visit. It is the oldest café in Buenos Aires, and the ambiance inside is incredible. The food is great too- I especially loved the cakes!

- Nicolo Helados: As I mentioned above, there are sooo many great ice cream places in Buenos Aires. Nicolo’s in Palermo was my favourite.
- Havana: I’m not sure if locals would agree with this one, but Havana café was one of my favourite places in Buenos Aires to try alfajores. There are locations all over the city. The coffee was nothing memorable, but the alfajores were delicious!

- Don Julio: Don Julio is another famous steakhouse in Buenos Aires, and for a good reason. The food was absolutely amazing! It is super busy though- make sure to make a reservation well in advance if you are planning to visit.
So there you have it- the best things to eat in Buenos Aires! And a few restaurants that you need to try. If you are travelling to Buenos Aires soon, I hope you get the chance to try a few things from this list! Happy travelling (and eating)!
