Is April a good time to visit Iceland? Read on to find out!
Iceland is a beautiful country no matter what time of year you visit. I don’t think there is any season you could go to Iceland and be disappointed by what you see. However, there are definitely pros and cons to visiting at certain times of the year. Weather, crowds, and scenery vary greatly between seasons. I went to Iceland this April, so I’ve put together this review to help you answer the question: is April a good time to visit Iceland?
Pros of visiting Iceland in April:
- It’s not busy season. One of my favourite things about visiting Iceland in April was that the crowds were minimal. Since April is between the winter and the summer seasons, fewer people are travelling to Iceland. Attractions weren’t too busy (except the Blue Lagoon, seems like that is always busy), we had no issues with day tours booking up, and we got a decent hotel for pretty cheap.
- The weather is decent in April in Iceland. When I visited, it was about 10° (50°) most days, with rain here and there. Seems like that is pretty typical for Iceland in April; the weather is not too hot, and not too cold. The snow was almost all melted by this time as well; it was visible on mountains, but there was no snow on the ground in Reykjavik, or at any of the waterfalls or beaches we visited.
- There are many outdoor activities available. Many activities that might not be doable in the winter will be accessible by April. You should be able to go whale watching, hiking, and even snorkeling (yes, snorkeling!) in Iceland in April. April is a great time of year for outdoor activities in Iceland!
- The driving is easier. The weather is also a benefit if you are planning to rent a car. Driving in the winter in Iceland could definitely be treacherous, but by April, the ring road was pretty much clear.
Cons of visiting Iceland in April:
- The sights are less attractive than in the winter or summer. The scenery is a bit… brown. The snow has just melted and it’s not too cold, so you won’t see frozen waterfalls and winter landscapes. But it’s also not green yet either- you won’t see luscious green hills and beautiful wildflowers. To be clear, when I went to Iceland in April, it was still stunning, but the scenery was pretty brown! Here are some photos I took in April, so you can get a sense of what I mean:
- The Northern Lights are less common in April. Another con of visiting April in Iceland is that you likely won’t be able to see the Northern lights. While it is possible (especially if you go in early April), your chances definitely decrease throughout the month. Most of the aurora borealis tours I could find stopped running mid-April.
- Some cold-weather activities won’t be available. Due to the warming weather, you likely won’t be able to visit ice caves or go ice fishing in Iceland in April. When I visited in April, we could not find any tour companies running ice cave tours.
Conclusion- is April a good time to visit Iceland?
So… is it worth it to visit Iceland in April? In my opinion: yes, April is a great time to visit Iceland! There are pros and cons, so if seeing the Northern lights or exploring an ice cave are bucket list items for you, you may want to consider going another time of year. Also, if you are wanting to see winter landscapes, April is not the right time of year to travel to Iceland. But overall, I think Iceland is definitely worth visiting in April. The lack of crowds and ease of finding accommodation and activities made for a very enjoyable trip, and most of Iceland’s most iconic sights are accessible.
