This blog post will go over my experience with Australia for solo female travelers.
Last year I had the chance to visit Australia for the first time. I had dreamed of visiting Australia for years, but it had never worked out to organize a trip with friends or family. Eventually I just decided to go on my own! I had a great time, so I’ve put together this post with my insights on what Australia is like for solo female travelers.
Are Australian cities safe for solo female travelers?
In my opinion, yes- Australian cities are very safe for solo female travelers! I visited both Sydney and Brisbane alone and felt very safe both walking around, and taking transit. The culture generally feels pretty safe and welcoming for women. Australia also has a low crime rate. There is little risk of pick-pocketing, so you shouldn’t have to worry about your things being stolen. Of course, you should take normal precautions. Don’t leave your things unattended, be careful walking at night, and be cautious of strangers (overall I found Australian people very nice though), and you should be fine!
Accommodation in Australia
I felt perfectly safe as a solo female travelers staying in hotels in Australia. All the hotel staff I encountered were very kind, and I didn’t have any encounters that made me feel nervous. I also stayed in a few hostels and felt very safe in them as well. The hostels I stayed in had options for female only rooms, which was a great way to meet other like-minded travelers! All of the accommodations I stayed in were near the city centers, where there were lots of people around, so I never felt isolated or nervous. Overall, I don’t think solo female travelers would have any issues with accommodation in Australia, as long as you take normal precautions.
Activities in Australia
Australia has some (although limited, in my opinion) options for public transit. I did take a few buses and trains by myself in Australia, and had no issues! I felt perfectly comfortable on transit alone there. However, a lot of activities outside of cities can only be accessed with a car. There are many options for group tours in Australia if you don’t feel comfortable renting a car and driving out of the city alone. This is another great way to meet other solo travelers! I went on lots of group day tours and had great experiences on all of them- I never felt unsafe or uneasy with the guides. Of course I can’t speak for every tour operator, but overall, I got the sense that it was very well regulated and safe.
Overall, I think Australia is great for solo female travelers! It is pretty safe, welcoming, and there is so much to do!
