A rainy day in Singapore
A rainy day in Singapore

I had the chance to visit Singapore for the first time in March of this year, and I absolutely loved it. There is so much to do for such a small city-state! I spent lots of time out on the go, and the weather was a bit unpredictable, so it was important to be prepared. I’ve put together this list of what to pack for Singapore that I wish I had before I went, so you can show up prepared and make the most of your time there.

What to Pack for Singapore: Clothing

  1. Comfortable walking shoes. Singapore is a pretty walkable place! I walked between many of the main attractions while I was there, and was very happy to have comfortable walking shoes.
  2. Rain jacket. Singapore gets a lot of rain. You will likely spend lots of time outside walking between destinations in Singapore, so it is a very good idea to pack a rain jacket.
  3. Linen pants or long dresses. There are some temples in Singapore that you may want to visit that will require you to have your knees and shoulders covered. Singapore can get hot, so linen is ideal to keep you cool while being covered!
  4. Long sleeve tee-shirts. For the same reason as above, it is a good idea to make sure you don’t just pack tank tops, even if the weather is forecasted to be hot. I also want to mention that I didn’t find the style of dress in Singapore to be particularly modest overall, unlike some other countries in South-East Asia. But it is good to be prepared just in case.
  5. Hat. Singapore can get very hot and sunny. It is good to have a hat to help protect you from the sun.
  6. Bathing suit. There are a few nice beaches in Singapore that you may want to visit! Even if not, many of the hotels there (and the airport) have pools.
  7. Sandals. Sandals are also good to have if you plan to check out the beaches!
  8. A nice outfit. This one is not essential, but there are many luxurious restaurants in Singapore. If you plan on visiting these, I would recommend packing a nicer outfit, like a nice dress, or a dress shirt for men.

What to Pack for Singapore: Toiletries and Accessories

  1. Umbrella. It rains a lot in Singapore! I was able to borrow an umbrella from my hotel in Singapore, but you likely won’t regret packing one just in case.
  2. Mosquito repellant. You may encounter mosquitoes in Singapore, especially in the evening.
  3. Backpack or travel purse. A backpack is great to have for when you are out and about for the day in Singapore. Especially with the changing weather, you may want a bag to carry around your umbrella/rain jacket. Singapore is very safe, so you don’t have to worry about carrying your important items in a backpack, as there is very little risk of pick-pocketing.
  4. Water bottle. It can be very hot in Singapore and you will likely do lots of walking, so it is important to stay hydrated!
  5. Sunscreen. You will probably spend lots of time outside in Singapore, so it is important to protect yourself from the sun.

What to Pack for Singapore: Electronics

  1. Outlet adapter. If you are coming from the US or Canada, the outlets in Singapore are not the same as at home! Bring a universal adapter so you can charge your devices.
  2. An E-SIM. If you want to avoid roaming while in Singapore, I would recommend looking in to getting an E-SIM. I visited a SIM card kiosk in the airport in Singapore, and the plans were very expensive.

What to Pack for Singapore: Other

  1. Credit cards. This one is obvious, but I just wanted to include this because Singapore is a mostly cash-free place. I spent 3 nights in Singapore, and did not even take out any cash while I was there.
  2. A Visa. This is not necessary for everyone, but it is absolutely essential you check the requirements for your country well in advance. Being from Canada, I did not need a visa for a visit of less than 30 days. I did have to submit an SG arrival card a few days prior to my arrival. Make sure you check the rules, as it is different for visitors from every country!
  3. Vaccines. Okay, this isn’t something you pack, but it is important to talk to your doctor or a travel clinic before you go to Singapore. I got a few vaccinations before my trip, but I visited Thailand as well on the same trip. As of the time I am writing this, a COVID-19 vaccine is no longer required to enter Singapore. But it is very important to check for updated information before your trip!

I hope this list of what to pack for Singapore helps you feel prepared for your trip! If you are heading to Singapore soon, check out my 2 day Singapore itinerary, so you can start planning and make the most of your time there.
